How to Use This Website
Here at GamePhobias, it's our goal to help gamers and their loved ones keep gaming a safe and comfortable environment. To that end, on this website we provide a few tools to help gamers to that end. We are constantly going through a process of keeping updated information on as many games as we can and classifying them according to their content. Additionally, we maintain a list of all the games we have currently reviewed and try to include helpful information about each game on their respective pages.
Using Content Advisory Tags
Each of our tags indicates that a game contains the specific kind of content described by that tag. For example, a game containing detailed depictions of violence would be tagged using our graphic-violence tag.
On our page Content Advisory Tags, each and every one of our tags is listed, along with a description of what kind of content warrants a game being labeled with that tag.
Clicking on a particular Content Advisory Tag will bring you to its own page, where the description of what content qualifies as being tagged is stated again, followed by two lists.
One list is labeled "Games With This Kind of Content." Below that label will be an automatically updated list of all games that we have flagged with that kind of content.
There will also be a second list, labeled "Games Free Of This Kind Of Content." Below that label will be an automatically updated list of all the games we are confident in saying are free of that kind of material.
It should be worth noting that on any particular Content-Advisory-Tag page, it is possible that not all of the games we have on file will be listed. This could be for a few reasons. The first reason could be that our review-process on a particular game is not complete, and the tags we have listed on it are only the tags we are confident in placing at that particular time. Another reason could be that we may not be in the process of actively reviewing a game, but may have received a tip that indicated a game has a certain kind of content that we should be aware of. We strive for accuracy in our reviews, but the process takes time, and mistakes can be along the way; for that reason, we especially try to avoid assigning "this game is free of" tags unless we're absolutely certain of that content's absence.
Using the Games List
Our Games List page contains an alphabetical list of all games that currently have pages on our site. In the instance of game being part of a series, the series title will come first. Each item in that list will link to that game's respective page.
Ideally, the page of a fully reviewed game will contain a brief description of the game, its tone, graphics, and themes, followed by a list which of the Content Advisory Tags a game qualifies for. Under each tag there will be descriptions of the places in the game in which this kind of content occurs, and how to avoid it, if possible.
Unfortunately, there are many many games out there, and the review process is long and difficult. Games with an incomplete review status will likely only contain a list of the kinds of content it includes, with only occasional, scattered descriptions of where that content can be found.
To ensure that browsing our site remains safe, we will never include potentially disturbing images on any of our game pages; all images will be a link to an outside file. It will still be our goal, however, to eventually include clearly-labeled links to potentially troubling images from games so that if players or their loved ones desire to take a closer look at the kind of the visual content of a given game to help assist them in the process of determining whether or not a game is right for them.
An example of this policy in action would be the inclusion of a link to a picture of an enemy from a particular videogame that might trouble someone with arachnophobia. In this way, gamers and their loved ones would have the opportunity to "test" certain kinds of content in a safe, controlled environment before playing a game.
