Luigi's Mansion is a game that follows Luigi as he searches for his missing brother Mario. His search takes him to a mansion that the brothers supposedly won in a contest. The mansion, however, turns out to be haunted. Going against his natural cowardice, Luigi must traverse the mansion and defeat the ghosts within to save his brother.

General Comments

The game has a cartoon art style. Everything is rendered in a cartoon manner.

Animal Abuse

There is a ghost dog that the player must fight. The dog makes whining and distressed noises when you fight it.

Avians

Crows are used to set the mood and can be seen in the opening scene of the game.

Bones

There is a ghost made of bones that the Player Character must fight.

The Player Character must use a bone to capture the ghost dog.

Canines

There is a ghost dog enemy that the Player Character must fight. The dog resembles a bulldog.

Darkness

Darkness is a main game mechanic. The Player Character has a flashlight but it is small. The player may be able to see general outlines of things in early rooms but they become darker as the game goes on.

Dolls

Shy Guy Ghosts wear porcelain masks that must be removed before they can be captured, and they appear doll-like. Chauncey, the first major boss and third portrait ghost is a ghost infant, and attacks with toys. The Twins, encountered later in the game, attack with toys, mostly vehicles. Sue Pea, a young girl also attacks with toys.

in the attic, Luigi must capture a set of 3 toy soldier ghosts.

Electrocution

Part of the purification process for the ghosts is to electrocute them. The Player character is never electrocuted.

Explosions

Purple hanging ghosts drop bombs throughout the game.

The final boss fights with explosives. They explode into fire but do not make a noise.

Fire

The Player Character receives the ability to shoot fire out of their vacuum. Using the ability is required to complete the game. The fire cannot get out of control and does not burn objects.

The ghost in the Dining Room attacks with fire.

There are doors throughout the game that are on fire. The Player Character must put the fire out.

The final boss fights with fire.

Ghosts

The game centers around confronting and capturing ghosts. Ghosts will jump out at the Player Character. There are some typical cartoon ghosts and some humanoid ghosts. The ghosts can harm the Player Character.

Guns

Toy soldier ghost enemies use guns. The guns do not fire bullets, they fire corks.

Heights

The Player Character must climb on top of two very high towers on a roof. At the top of the second tower, the Player Character falls through a chimney and down several floors.

Jump Scares

Ghosts will often randomly jump out at you throughout the game. In particular, there are ghosts that will fall suddenly from the ceiling to attack the Player Character.

Kidnapping

Part of the game’s plot is that Mario has been kidnapped.

The primary game mechanic is capturing and holding ghosts against their will.

Rats/Rodents

There are ghost mice throughout the game.

There are ghost bats throughout the game.

Stalking

Ghosts will follow the Player Character and attempt to attack them.

The Player Character must stalk ghosts from room to room late in the game.

Unreality

It is implied and eventually revealed that the mansion was an illusion created by ghosts.

In the Observatory the walls suddenly dissolve and the Player Character is wandering in space among the stars. It is unclear how this happens.

Violence Against Children

There is a baby ghost that the player character must fight.

There are two young children ghosts that the Player Character must fight.

There is a young girl that the Player Character can fight. She is not required to beat the game and can be left alone.

Vomiting

The ghost in the Dining Room attacks by vomiting fire.

Weapons

Some ghosts attack with spears in the ballroom. There are assorted weapons in the Armory. The weapons can hit and damage the Player Character.
