El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is an adventure/platforming game. You play as Enoch, a man that has been sent by God battle seven Fallen Angels and imprison them to save the world from the biblical Great Flood. Enoch must traverse the Fallen's tower and combat the different challenges the Fallen throw in his path before God floods the world and kills humanity.

Aquatic Violence

The enemy Ezek V bubbles up from the water and uses water to attack you. The level “Cry of Armaros” is completely underwater.

Avians

The archangels that appear to assist the Player Character in the game appear as geese. They are not hostile.

Blood

The bosses Foola and Woola in Ezikiel’s world cry blood.

If you die in a shadow realm, you will get sucked down into a pool that seems to be blood. This results in a game over.

Body Horror

All the transformations of the Fallen Angel bosses have them contort and jerk in painful-looking ways. They transform into animals/insects.

Bones

A side-quest involves gathering “fragments of Ishtar’s bones”---they do not look like bones, they look like bamboo shoots. There are visible bones that end that level, via a skeleton hand reaching out and hauling the Player Character back to the main game.

The level “Cry of Armaros” has décor that looks like bones---mostly ribs and spines.

Cannibalism

It is revealed in the game that nephilim eventually go mad and devour each other. This is shown in a cutscene after the player defeats Sauriel. The cutscene is skippable.

Death of Family/Friends

Armaraos is said to be the Player Character’s friend. There is no hint of the friendship in the game; their friendship is only mentioned by other characters. After completing the section where the player plays as Armaros, Armoros is murdered on screen.

After defeating Armaros it appears that the young girl Nanna dies.

After the player defeats Ezekiel, Nana/Ishtar is shown dying.

Depiction of War

After Nana becomes Ishthar, she leads an army against the Fallen. The battle is shown on-screen.

Dolls

A number of enemies will appear with ceramic masks that make them appear doll-like. The Player Character smashes these masks as part of combat.

Drowning

If you die in a shadow realm, you will get sucked down into a pool that seems to be blood. This results in a game over.

All of the level “Cry of Armaros” is underwater. The Player Character can fall into the water, but it is a game over before the Player Character hits the water.

Electrocution

The boss Ezekiel uses electricity to attack. The attacks will stun the Player Character if hit. Both her forms use these.

Explosions

In the second level of the game there are fireworks in the background.

The Gale weapon can create explosions.

In Belial’s realm, there are mines that the player must activate and then run from before they explode.

Fire

There are enemies called Wisps that are giant balls of fire.

The powerups for Uriel are fire that you run through, though it is magic fire.

Multiple characters talk about others burning to death. This is not shown on screen.

Ezekiel's level has rings of fire you must jump through.

The level “Tragedy of Baraquel” has fire falling from the ceiling.

After the motorcycle part of Azazel’s Zeal level, the screen is engulfed in fire and the Player Character walks out of it.

The boss Nether Ezekiel uses fire attacks.

When the player reaches higher level so Uriel’s boost power, the Player Character will trail fire behind him.

The boss Azazel’s second form uses fire to fight.

Ghosts

Spirits appear to lead you through certain extra levels. They are grey, vaguely humanoid blobs.

Spirits of the Beloved are enemies that are ghosts that will possess you as an attack.

There are entities in the platforming section after Ezekiel’s lair revealed to be Sauriel’s beloved---souls that are forced to stay with Sauriel for eternity. They can attack and possess the Player Character.

Guns

Gale weapon is required to be used by the player, fires glowing projectiles. It is used by enemies and the Player Character.

Heights

In the first cutscene the main character jumps off of platform in the sky and then rewinds back up to the platform.

Most of the game involves platforming at heights where you can easily fall.

In Belial’s realm there are several parts where the player is forced to make blind falls during platforming.

Insects

The first boss of the game is announced with bee swarms. He uses swarms of bees to fight. Bees surround you and attack you in small black swarms. There are no detailed depictions, just buzzing.

There are enemies called Ramps with thick bodies and spindly legs. They are humanoid, but could be triggering for someone sensitive to insects.

After the player defeats the Fire Nephilim the player character is taken into the sky by a giant insect. The boss Azazel fights with swarms of insects. His second form involves him being swarmed by a huge amount of insects and turning into a giant wasp. In the second form the floor also turns into bugs if you stand on it too long.

Murder

After completing the section where the player plays as Armaros, Armoros is murdered on screen.

Needles

The level “Tragedy of Baraquel” has all its platforming sections above beds of needles that the Player Character can fall into.

Nudity

After defeating Dark Enoch, Enoch appears to be naked. No genitalia are visible.

Rats/Rodents

The boss Saruiel attacks with warms of bats.

The boss Sauriel turns into a bat after you fight him the last time in his lair.

Supernatural Evil

Demons are the main enemies of the game and they look like demons. The game revolves around fighting and imprisoning fallen angels.

Verbal Abuse

Throughout the game the Fallen repeatedly show up and berate the Player Character about the futility of his mission and how useless he is.

Violence Against Children

A child appears to be trapped in the Fallen's tower.

After defeating Armaros the first time, a young child is apparently dragged to Hell. She is saved by the Player Character.

Weapons

The Player Character uses several weapons throughout the game that enemies also have access to.
  • Arc: a bow-like weapon that is used in melee combat
  • Gale: a circular weapon that functions like a gun
  • Veil: a weapon that looks like a shield and is used in melee combat

In Belial’s realm there are spinning sword blades that impede the player during platforming sections.
