Five Nights at Freddy's is an independent horror game. You play as a night security guard at a pizza place called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. During the night the animatronics begin to act a bit... strange. Your goal changes from guarding the restaurant to surviving the night. Using the limited resources available to you, you must defend yourself until morning.
Contents
Avians
One of the animatronics is a bird. The bird will attack the Player Character during the game.
Blood
A substance can be found in the game that appears to be dried blood. It is unclear.
News articles found in the game mention blood.
Canines
There is an anthropomorphic, animatronic fox enemy in the game.
Claustrophobia
The player begins the game in a small room and cannot leave it. At times, animatronic monsters will appear at the doorways, forcing the player to close the doors.
Clowns
While not strictly clowns, the animatronic animals are characters that are originally intended for humorous purposes that have taken on a sinister new role, similar to clowns. In addition, carnival-like music is a significant part of the game's atmosphere.
Darkness
The game world is intentionally quite dark, the amount of power (and light) you have available is regulated by the game and is often insufficient, and the animatronic animals hide in the darkness often.
Dead Bodies
The corpses are implied rather than directly seen. If the player is unsuccessful in keeping the animatronics away from them, the player is apparently stuffed inside a suit and cut up by the wiring. The game over screen shows an suit with teeth and eyeballs hanging out of it, implying the player's corpse is inside. Later in the game, the player gets a phone call from a coworker saying that they are hiding in a particular room and ask the player to check it. If this is done, there is evidence that the coworker was stuffed inside a suit and killed as well.
Dolls
The game centers around the Player Character being attacked by evil animatronic dolls.
Eye Horror/Eye Trauma
If the player is caught by the animatronics, all that is left of them is their eyes and teeth.
Gore
If the player is caught by the animatronics, all that is left of them is their eyes and teeth.
Jump Scares
The game contains a large variety of possible jump scares. The game developers are genre savvy and have tricks in place to make the player think they successfully escaped danger or that a scare wasn't triggered, then pulls it once the player feels secure. There is no possible way to avoid this.
Kidnapping
In addition to the player character being dragged from wherever the animatronic enemies find them and being stuffed into a full animatronic suit (and killed in the process), there are several posters and other pieces of information in the game that imply a gruesome history of abductions and murders of children at the Pizzeria.
Murder
If the player (or anyone else) is caught, they will be murdered by animatronics.
Psychological Horror
The game is adept at, and generally regarded by most who have played it as capable of, instilling immense paranoia in the player, even those not normally sensitive to any particular kind of material.
Supernatural Evil
What makes the animatronics murderous is unclear, but supernatural evil is a definite possibility.
Violence Against Children
A phone call during the first night mentions an instance where a man lured children into the back and murdered them. Several posters located in the building both corroborate this story and discuss another event in which more children were murdered.
