Randomly generated animals are encountered by the player as they go around the game, and these animals are usually heavily mutilated or distorted due to the radiation that surrounds them, e.g a nightstalker is a type of dog that has been merged with a rattle snake.
In a DLC called 'Old World Blues' the character can find a basement where it is heavily implied animals have been tortured and experiment on here. In the same DLC players can splice a dog with a human or a robot.
