Plants vs. Zombies is a strategy game developed by PopCap Games and published by PopCap Games and Electronic Arts. In the game you are the survivor of a zombie apocalypse. However, huge groups of zombies have your house under siege. In order to protect yourself you must arrange sentient plants in your yard that will both attack the zombies and defend your home. As the game progresses there are craftier and craftier zombies, but you also gain more and more powerful plants. Using nothing but your wits and your gardening skills, your goal is to survive. There are also mini-games that can be unlocked through gameplay. The game is available to play online for free here.

General Comments

The game's art is very cartoon-y. Zombies and plants are rendered as cartoons, not in a realistic fashion.

Bones

When zombies are attacked and begin to lose health their arms fall off and the bones are exposed.

Cannibalism

Zombies can eat the sentient plants that you put up to protect your home. Some of the plants make sad facial expressions if they are eaten.

Zombies are implied to eat you if they reach your house. There is a scream and crunching noises.

Zombies will eat each other if you use the Hypno-shroom on them. You are not required to use this plant.

Darkness

In the nighttime pool level, half the lawn will be covered in fog. The player is unable to see zombies approaching in the fog but they are able to hear the zombies. The fog can be dispersed with the Torchwood and Plantern plants and temporarily dispersed with the Blover plant.

Dead Bodies

There are zombies, which do fall to the ground as corpses when they are defeated.

Disease

The game implies that zombies are the result of a zombie disease. The player cannot become a zombie.

Drowning

The Tangle Kelp plant you can use in the pool level will drag zombies underwater to kill them. You are not required to use this plant.

Explosions

Cherry Bomb, Doom Shroom, Jalapeno, and Potato Mine plants make explosion noises along with an explosion animation. Doom Shrooms make mushroom clouds as well. Jalapenos leave a line of fire in the column. You are not required to use these plants.

In the bowling minigames there are Explode-o-Nuts that cause an explosion that kills zombies, with an explosion noise and animation. These are required to play the minigame.

Fire

Torchwood and Jalapeño plants involve fire. The Torchwoods burn constantly and set other projectiles on fire, the Jalapeños streak a line of fire down the column that burns enemies. You are not required to use these plants. The final boss throws fire balls at the player’s plants.

Guns

The Gatling Pea upgrade is modeled to look like a gatling gun. It shoots peas instead of bullets and has no noise to go along with it. You are not required to use this upgrade.

Mind Control

The Hypno-shroom forces zombies to turn around and fight other zombies for you. You are not required to use this plant.

Murder

The player can be killed off screen if a zombie reaches the house. There are crunching sounds and a scream if this happens.

Mutilation

When zombies get low on health, they begin to lose limbs. Their heads pop off when they are defeated.

Undead/Zombies

The game involves fighting zombies. The zombies are green, slightly deformed, and shuffle like zombies. They also make moaning noises and chant "Brains" as they move.
